Led by Tom Sigmund, the independent living residents of Arbutus Park Retirement Community have embarked upon a new initiative: ‘Project Porch.’ Project Porch is a monthly food drive held the second Wednesday of each month. Campus residents place non-perishable food and household items on their front porch, to be collected by the committee. Once collected, the donations are delivered to a different local community food bank/pantry each month.
This inaugural drive benefits the pantry of the Greater Johnstown Christian Fellowship. The effort is being spearheaded by Tom Sigmund, who feels that the communities surrounding our campus are so supportive of our efforts and our community, that we should give back. “We are dedicated to acquiring and distributing food to Johnstown area residents who have a need for community support to keep themselves and their families fed. Hopefully, this will help create a community without hunger.” The first drive, held Wednesday September 8, generated three full vehicles of donations. Approximately fifty of the ninety cottages participated in the drive.
